Snow? Say It Isn't So!

No planting yet. First we have to wait for the SNOW to go away! Freak snowstorm, just when we thought winter might be over. But that's okay--we have lots of indoor prep to do: seed starts, flourescent lighting set up--our mud room will look like a biology lab soon.

Today we have all our seeds in our grubby little hands. How exciting! Now I know how all you parents feel. These are our babies! We are responsible for them. They depend on us. We need them to live, grow and die so we can eat their leaves, seeds, or fruit. In exchange, we give them life. Symbiosis in the making.

I think we make out better in this deal.
Here's what we're going to grow--our little seed babies. Please don't expect us to know the latin name. We're virgins, remember?

Beans: Fin de Bagnole (fancy!)
Beets: Detroit Dark Red (in honor of my dad)
Broccoli: Calabrese (that's Italian)
Brussel Sprouts: Long Island Improved (holding my nose)
Carrots: Scarlet Nantes (frankly, I hope they grow worth a damn)
Corn: Golden Bantam (sounds reasonable enough)
Cucumber: Muncher (simple is good)
Eggplant: Rosa Bianca (lovely orbs of purple and white)
Lettuce: Lettuce Mix (nothin' fancy 'bout that)
Kale: Red Russian (commie kale)
Leeks: Blue Solaize (OMG they're gorgeous. On the seed packet.)
Peas: Dwarf Grey (sugar snaps) AND British Wonder (and I do)
Peppers: King of the North (no Queen?) and Ancho Gigantra (big mofos) and Jalepeno (we'll call them Pedro)
Swiss Chard: Ruby Red (we'll call it Dorothy)
Meet the Squashes: Dwarf Crookneck, Waltham Butternut, Black Beauty, Table Queen (there she is)
Spinach: Bloomsdale (beats Doomsday)
Tomatoes: Stupice (if they don't grow they'll be StuPID) and Oroma (I prefer Obama)
And from the herb garden, we'll enjoy the graceful, flavorful stylings of:
Genovese Basil, Oregano, Cilantro, Thyme, Hidcote Blue Lavender, Giant Italy Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and of course, Thyme.

But first, the snow must melt.
